VTT

We have expertise in impact assessment for the following areas: traffic safety, efficiency and environment, personal mobility, driver and traveller behaviour, vehicle operations, user acceptance and HMI, quality of life, and socio-economics. In addition to the direct effects of systems and services, we also aim to tackle global challenges by identifying wider socio-technical changes and indirect and long-term implications of the changes in traffic environment, driver and traveller behaviour, infrastructure and vehicles. Our knowhow and viewpoint is based on theories and transport system level understanding of impacts.

Our assessments are based on data from e.g. field experiments, traffic simulations, road safety and other statistics, and traffic databases. We analyse and process data with state of the art methods and analysis tools. Our tools enable scaling-up of results from small scale field experiments and/or simulations to national and European level. We use multidisciplinary approaches, and when needed, exploit VTT’s research infrastructure and available competence portfolio of other domains.

Our interdisciplinary research on transport foresight focuses on building visions, scenarios, roadmaps and action plans to promote the different dimensions of

sustainable mobility and related socio-technical change. In the field of transport policy analysis, we identify policy instruments and recommendations and create guidelines to support transport climate policies, active and smart

mobility strategies and sustainability transition in general. We collect and combine both qualitative and quantitative data for the basis of our work and apply various participatory and analytical foresight and policy analysis

methods, tools, frameworks and system dynamics in our research.
